Forget the alleged perpetrator, Jack the Ripper, and the often fanciful identities - from the painter Walter Sickert to a grandson of Queen Victoria - that have been attributed to him. Focus instead on his victims, the "canonical" five women, who were brutally murdered on the streets of Whitechapel in east London over 10 weeks in the autumn of 1888. The police, the press and the public egged each other on in demonising these destitute females as prostitutes - a view that persists in the macabre myth of the Ripper, the crazed killer of sex workers.

Of the countless shows The Cranberries played in their 30-year history one, in particular, stands out for Noel Hogan. It wasn't a stadium show, or a big arena performance or a festival. It was far more modest than that. "It was a gig in TJ's in Newport," he says, of a 1993 show in south Wales that was part of an early UK tour. "There were, like, five people there. It was an awful gig. We were all feeling really defeated at that point."

It was all things vegan, both food and conversation, at the Dr Bronner's lunch in the Drury Buildings. Miriam Ahern, who is a long-standing fan of the brand, was one of the guests invited by Michael Bronner. Michael is the grandson of the founder of the pioneering natural brand, and I know people who wouldn't dream of washing themselves, or their pets, in anything other than their famous peppermint soap. Michael was in Dublin with his sister Lisa for a lunch hosted by Paul Irwin of Life's Great, and the food was in-keeping with the very green ethos of the company.

The theatre may well be the best artistic medium in which to tease out complex moral questions, primarily because in embodying humans on stage, you expand the possibilities of empathy. Thus, even people who have done the unforgivable can be given an essential humanity. Playwright Jimmy Murphy's new work for Glass Mask Theatre dives head first into this question of forgiving the unforgivable. The shape of the writing is influenced by big American theatre moralists like Arthur Miller and August Wilson. Murphy creates a large family drama in a small backyard.

For some readers, the premise of Beth O'Leary's debut may require a certain suspension of disbelief, though perhaps not for anyone familiar with the Dublin rental market. After being dumped by her boyfriend, Tiffy is in urgent need of a new flat, but her minimum-wage job at a niche London publishing house puts her in a tight spot. When she sees an unusual ad for a flatshare - or, more accurately, a bedshare - she grimly considers it.
